These works continue the Nam.Q.Area series, inspired by the shape of a playful and tidy Quantum Microchip, mirror of our increasingly fluid, immaterial, virtual reality. Visitors are invited to go over the drawing, step on this shared, participated space to give it meaning.
Day after day our life is increasingly projected into the virtual dimension. Often our body is here, but the mind is everywhere. One day by now, microchips will greatly extend the limits of what we ordinarily call intelligence and life, redefining human nature.
Courage, ingenuity, perseverance and disobedience as a moral discipline. Cosimo Piovasco di Rondò is the protagonist of “Il Barone Rampante” by Italo Calvino. Since childhood, he decides to live the whole existence on the trees.
Despite appearances, he devotes much time to personal edification through study and reading, even managing to contribute in a surprisingly effective way to everyday events and social progress. Regardless of family and social expectations, Cosimo cultivates his true vocation with courage, ingenuity, perseverance and disobedience elevated to the rank of moral discipline.
This work was performed in 2016 during the residence at Chanorth (Chashama Resideny), Pine Plains (New York)
At first I realized seven rainbow stripes by fingher knitting, which after I worn becoming instrument of revealing, discovery and redefinition of identity. Then from my body the focus has shifts to outside of me, towards nature, relationship. Using those seven stripes, I dressed a tree on which I actually climbed by a rope ladder.
Materials: Rope, wool, photographs, video shoots – (2016)
Since autumn 2010, the NAM project started with the execution of a drawing on the ground, a shared space suitable to be walked on, crossed to signify the idea of participated culture: a sort of warpgate of simple and playful appearance, with a crystalline and universal beauty, inspired by the golden proportion, the cymatic, the snow crystals. The drawings on the outside are made with simple colored chalks (innocuous and absolutely impermanent material that progressively cancels when walked on and washes away at the first rain), or in the interior spaces bycolored adhesive tape or colored cardboard.
Spiegare il mare (Folder the Sea)
Designed with reference to the sea and the Mediterranean, this artwork is composed of 5 distinct elements, each one made by a large sheet (200 x 135 cm) in transparent polyethylene painting. As if an aorganic trace had been left on the surface, color drips are memory of a real contact with the sea. The sheets are folded and suspended in a linear, rhythmic and light game, a dialectic between the three-dimensional concreteness and the corresponding mental map.
It responds to the desire to explore the boundaries of an endless universe, a submarine world that generates life trying to understand its secrets, to restore its mysterious charm, variety and beauty that is hidden in the horizontal dimension of dealy life. Concrete such as flesh, blood, organic matter. Reason can not explain what we know only through direct experience.
Nam Flying Notes
Public is invited to participate directly in the development of this interactive work: the installation provides a number of sheets of paper to freely write and draw.
Shown on the web, for some time it was also possible to interact with it by sending new images or modificate, like a living organism in continuous transformation. Once in the circle, the signs are going to multiply, to change appearance in a unique and unrepeatable way.
Weapons of bread
This installation was designed for an intervention at the Ecomuseum of Resistance “Colle del Lis”, after exhibited at the CSSR, the Turin Center for Peace Studies.
If ideals, however noble, are subject to a continuous and cyclical revision and nothing can face a crisis of values that seems always relevant, the partisan struggle is historical, it is ideal embodied by brave men and women, especially boys, who did not fear the sacrifice. Their memory questions us, builds, together with them, our identity, what we are and also what we will be in the future. Their example can not leave us indifferent.
Eight guns are modeled in bread dough, along with the relative boxes of ammunition, arranged neatly next to the box that held them, perhaps hidden, over the fabrics that kept them wrapped.
Nam 46 (interacting squares)
In Sanskrit, the oldest of the Indo-European languages known to us, “nam” means name, identity, and with a small difference in writing, it also indicates the reunification of one’s own individuality with the cosmic flow of life energy. Fire, among all the natural elements, is the most suitable to express this transformation. In fact, not only in Indian traditions but in the cultures of all the world, we see it at the center of the rituals of purification and regeneration.
Molded with flour, some small burners appeares as archaic, primary forms, suitable for use during primitive and hypothetical rituals of fire. These elements are placed according to precise patterns to create installations and performances when they are actually turned on.
It was a site-specific video-installation created in the former prison called “Le Nuove”, in Turin, in 2009.
warp gate is a door, the archetype which represents the crossing between two worlds, the wellknown reality and the inner dimension. It indicates a tunnel, a contraction of space and time, the passage from one place to another of the cosmos, situated at the same time inside and outside us. Inside as outside the prison, our existence is consumed in ritual repetition of simple gestures, alienating actions. But habits also create a series of coordinates and values that become the door to access the invisible.
Taking inspiration from an ancient indian rituals of purification, I created a small burner and some containers for substances and fire.
“It is matter the basis of the scale of perfection.
Life is a purification ritual: He is in the air above the carpet.” Sandro Baroni
Modular PI Greek (Pi greco modulare)
The first modular composition, Binomial (Binomio), was a simple double sequence of half full cubes separated by pauses (half empty cubes), such as in the Morse or binary code. Here the ensemble is built around the shape of a “Pi”, primary sign of extraordinary simplicity that seems to contain all the alphabet. A letter that is also a number: p in mathematics provides the linear measure of the perfect shape par excellence, the circle.
This work is not composed of a fixed number of elements and has not a stable form. Every time, the disposition may be changed to create very different formal solutions.
It is composed by an apparently unstable structure, made with wood and cardboard, to which some elements are hung.
A code (threadlike elements that look like barbed wire) allows the vision: the image of a Venus that could be taken from an ancient painting, or in any case timeless (actually created on purpose). She presents herself disassembled in five vertical portions, subject to the instability caused by the different degrees of rotation they can take because of small movements connecting with the surrounding space. We can’t see her entirely.
While human categories inevitably seem to lead to the dialectic of opposites, being shows itself not in metaphysical uniqueness but but through action and communicates through dialogue and interpretation.
Vital space (Spazio vitale)
In a rectangular o circular space, six cylindrical elements are placed at an equal distance from each other: suggested by the presence of the columns, the asrchitettonic space is part of the world but, at the same time, it seems to offer different point of view: sacred space and real space are present at the same time. Art represents a point of view on the world where our gaze meets others, nature and people, in the eternal dimension.
From the six cylinders a code made of colorful, light, playful strips similar to barbed wire comes out. Natural germination, it springs from the earth to reveal immediately the artifice, in this case surprisingly playful and ludic, perhaps because only in the natural simplicity of relationships, the highest values can truly be understood.
This work starts from a poem dedicated both to the “ultremarine” color and to the contemplation of a navy.
A video artificially simulates the waves of the sea and minimal atmospheric movements of the sky. A golden line appears and disappears in the horizon, variations of brightness, contrast and color tones allude to the impermanence of the present. Thise archetypal image rejects every contingent fact, it projects us in the eternal dimension of the being.
This video dialogues with three large “shells” raised, each raised on a base, a cardboard lectern on which the poetry is exposed.
Designed as site-specific for the Fenestrelle Fortress, the installation consists of more than 120 meters of barbed wire made of cardboard suspended above the wall, almost merging with the rough and irregular surface of the rock.
A distant memory of trenches project shadows on a horizontal succession of drawings, digital creations from photographs of the same structure actually, for an uninterrupted six-meter sequence. fiction of a specific language based on tradition, art questions us about its actual social role in the modern context.
The prevailing horizontal course contrasts with a vertical sequence constructed from half transparent cubes, which contain over 100 meters of the same cardboard structure, to form a sort of menhir, a metaphor of the collective effort necessary to build a world of peace and authentic spiritual values.
Sensitive structure (struttura sensibile)
A brittle cardboard filiform structure, of variable length, is positioned in the exhibition space. It imitates a barbed wire that has become ironically harmless, airy and playful. The work is set up in an ever-changing way, in close relation with the environment that hosts it, always giving rise to different trends.
Executed for the Humus exposition, «H2O Target» indicates the source of life, symbolized by the rainbow colors, «Birds of Paradise» are made with the technique of origami using advertising paper.
